Mobile phone use has been the subject of one the highest and most immediate consumer adoption rates of any electronic product for past decade. This trend has been observed all over globe with the adoption in some developing countries surpassing that of some older more economically empowered countries. With newer and better versions of these hand-held devices coming into the market every few months, the mobile phone market has experienced an almost exponential growth. 1.Environmental Friendly Technology
Mobile phone manufacturers have started looking for biodegradable materials that can be substituted for the petroleum derived plastic used in the devices. The premise is to ultmately have mobile phone waste that can naturally and fully breakdown into organic constituents harmlessly.
This approach involves disassembling the circuitry of discarded mobile phone devices into the various individual chips and function defined modules that make up the device. The goal is to reuse the modules and chips in the manufacture of new devices.
Petroluem derived plastic is the major component of mobile devices. Once the reusable parts of the discarded device have been removed, the remaining plastic is mechanicaly broken down into a fine powder. The powder is then reused as a raw material for the plastic used in other products.
- Thermal Treatment
Thermal treatment is used in the recovery of the heavy metals used in the circuit board of discarded mobile phone. By heating fragments obtained after crushing circuit boards, the metal is separated from the plastic. The metal, mostly copper,can then be reused in the manufacture of new electronic devices.
- Hydrometallugical Extraction
This trend has a similar goal to thermal treatment. Hydrometallugical treatment involves the use of chemicals to dissolve the metal used on mobile phone circuit boards. The metal is then precipitated from the solution after its extraction. The copper metal once obtained is then used in the manufacture of cicuit boards for other electronic devices.
All the trends in mobile phone waste management mentioned above have one thing in common. This is to make it possible to recycle as much of the discarded mobile phone as possible. Thus the intended outcome of the different trends is reducing the impact that mobile phone waste would have on the environment.
